இரங்கல் குறிப்பு - டாக்டர்.நொரிஹிகோ உச்சிதா

என் தாய்மொழி சௌராஷ்ட்ரா. என் மூதாதையர் குஜராத்தில் சௌராஷ்ட்ரா பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள். இஸ்லாயமியர்களின் படையெடுப்பின் போது அவர்களுடைய கொடுங்கோலுக்கு அஞ்சி தங்கள் பிறந்தகத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறிய பலரில் மூதாதையர்களும் அடங்குவர். அங்ஙனம் புலம்பெயர்தலில் சிலர் வரும் வழியில் கர்நாடகா, ஆந்திராவில் தங்கிவிட, (இன்றும் திருப்பதியில் என் தாய்பாஷை பேசும் மக்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள்) ஒரு சாரார் மட்டும் மதுரைக்கு திருமலை நாயக்கரால் அழைத்தது வரப்பட்டார்கள் என்கிறது வரலாறு. குலத்தொழிலான நெசவுத்தொழிலில் புலமை பெற்றிருந்ததாலேயே "பட்டுநூல்காரர்கள்" என்றே சமூகம் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. வளரும் வயது வரை தாய்மொழி எழுத்துக்களின் அறிமுகம் எனக்கு கிடையாது. பேச்சு வழக்கு மட்டுமே இருந்தது. அவரவர்க்கு இருக்கும் தாய்மொழி மீதான அபிமானம் போல எனக்கும் என் தாய்ப்பாஷை மீது அளப்பரிய காதல் உண்டு. எங்களுக்கே எங்களுக்கான சில கலாச்சார பழக்கங்கள், உணவு, உடைகள், திருவிழாக்கள் என்ற பெருமிதம் நிறையவே உண்டு. அதுவும் மதுரை சௌராஷ்ட்ரா மக்களுக்கு அதிகமாகவே இருக்கும். எங்கள் சமூகத்து மக்கள் திண்டுக்கல், திருநெல்வேலி, கும்பகோணம், சேலம், சென்னை என்று பரவலாக இருந்தாலும் மதுரையில் அதிகளவில் இருக்கிறார்கள். அரசியலில், விடுதலைப் போரில் பங்கேற்ற பெரியவர்கள் பலரும் உள்ளனர். நாட்டிற்கும், வாழும் மாநிலத்திற்கும், பழகும் மக்களுக்கும்  விசுவாசமாக நடக்கும் தேசிய அபிமானிகள் எம்மக்கள்.

இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு சிறிய சமூகத்தைப் பற்றி அறிந்து அதனைப் பற்றி ஆராய ஜப்பானிலிருந்து வந்தவர் தான் டாக்டர். நொரிஹிகோ உச்சிதா. அவர் பிளா குடும்பங்களுடன் நெருங்கிப் பழகி, ஒரு சௌராஷ்ட்ராவாக வாழ்ந்து எங்களுடைய பழக்க வழக்கங்களை, வரலாறுகளை ஆராய்ந்து மிகப்பெரிய தொகுப்புகளை எழுதியுள்ளார். என் கணவர் மூலம் இந்த தகல்வல்கள் எனக்குத் தெரிய வந்தது. அவர்கள் இருவரும் மதுரையில் சந்தித்துமிருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஜப்பானில் இருந்த ஒருவருக்கு பல மைல்களுக்கு அப்பால் மதுரையில் இருக்கும் ஒரு சமூகத்தினரைப் பற்றி ஆராய்ச்சி செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற உந்துதல் எதுவாக இருந்திருக்கும்? அதிசயம் தானே?! அப்பேர்பட்ட நல்ல மனிதர் இறந்து விட்டார் என்ற தகவல் வருத்தமாக இருந்தாலும் நிறைவாக வாழ்ந்த அந்த ஆத்மா சாந்தி பெற இறைவன் அருளட்டும்.

Dr Norihiko Uchida, a scholar from Japan, and who did significant research in finding and compiling the literature of the sourashtrians, passed away yesterday. He also compiled a Sourashtra dictionary, which is a remarkable feat for any foreigner to the sourashtra language. That dictionary is in fact the only one ever put together!

I have seen him once at Madurai thirty years or so before when he used to regularly visit and spent an evening with him. I have his book ‘the oral literature of the sourashtrians’ and in fact set to tune too one of the marriage songs he had collected in his search of the literature of sourashtrians. I remember with pleasure the splash it made among those who listened to my version of that song. It begins with caricaturing the bridegroom as ‘dhovro novro’ (a very old bridegroom) and making fun of him in the entire song in such a playful manner that it would have brought only joy and laughter on a happy occasion as the marriage ceremony.

That such lively folk songs which were sung in sourashtra by the Sourashtrians in various occasions as marriages, even on first nights, was entirely unknown to me till I came across him and this book. The sourashtrians of today have no such singing and dancing in their marriages or other ceremonies. There are many other songs for many other occasions too, in that book! He took the efforts of traveling to many unknown cities forty years before in his search of the sourashtra literature. That no other sourashtrian took any such efforts after him makes even more remarkable his achievements.
