சிறு வயதில் இருந்தே நான் கண்டு வளர்ந்த மங்களச் சின்னம் ஸ்வஸ்திகா. கோவில்கள், வீட்டுப் பூஜையறைகள், கடைகள், வாசலில் போடும் கோலங்கள் என இன்று வரையில் இரண்டற கலந்திருக்கும் புனிதச் சின்னம் எனக்குப் புதிது அல்ல. நான் வாசலில் போடும் கோலங்களில் இச்சின்னத்தைக் கண்ட அமெரிக்க நண்பர்களுக்கு முதலில் அதிர்ச்சியாக இருந்தாலும் அதன் உண்மைப் பொருள் தெரிந்தவுடன் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு என்னை கவனமாக இருக்க அறிவுறுத்தினார்கள்.

That is one reason why there is separation of church and state here in the states. Have the faith you want, but that doesn’t give you the right to make others endure your personal beliefs.

The easiest way to tell the difference between a swastika and a hakenkreuz (the Nazi symbol) is that the swastika's arms lay flat and the hakenkreuz is on a diagonal. but the swastika as a religious symbol doesn't necessarily have to have the dots. Some religions use the dots, some don't. But the symbol doesn't require them in order to make it palatable to you.
2. I mean you're entitled to your opinion. But personally as a Japanese-American woman I feel like our cultures and other cultures who have used this symbol for thousands of years deserve to be able to use it for our religious and cultural purposes without the judgement or needing to make it palatable for you. It's not our fault that the Nazis took a symbol of peace and appropriated it. We don't owe it to you to add dots so you don't associate it with Nazis.
3. you do realize that *you're* being intolerant and insensitive, right? You expect us to conform to your expectations of "appropriateness" in order to make you feel more comfortable despite the fact that this has been tradition for thousands of years. it's not our fault the Nazis took this symbol and appropriated it. Don't punish us for the faults of others.
4. I fully recognize that the Nazis took the symbol and appropriated it and have made it to be a symbol of hate. But I also think that Hindus, Buddhists, Jainists, Native Americans, and Norse Pagans deserve to reclaim and redefine the symbol so that it no longer is associated automatically with Nazism. And I'm not attacking you, I'm pointing out that a symbol that we have used for thousands of years was stolen from us and used in ways we don't agree with. We don't deserve to be punished for the actions of those who have wronged us.
5. Nazism, racism, and anti-Semitism has one place in our world- our history books. It is important that we have real, adult conversations about the actions and beliefs of the Nazis so we can continue to keep future generations educated on the subject and hopefully avoid another group just like it gaining power. That being said, that includes explaining how they took a symbol that has had significant religious meaning for thousands of years and altered it, using it for their own wicked purposes. And the importance of being able to recognize the differences between the swastika and a hakenkreuz. Indigenous religions, ancient religions, and Eastern religions should not be punished for their symbol being appropriated.
6. The whole point of this post and my stance is that we are trying to educate people so the symbol can be reclaimed for the people who really own it.

10. I absolutely understand your point. Absolutely. However, there are MILLIONS of people who are not Nazi's....not even German, who have used this as THEIR religious symbol. We should always take it in the context it's given. If it's presented by a Hindu, a Buddhist etc, for a holiday, then take it at exactly at its face value. If it's used as graffiti by an Arian group, then call it out with all the shame it deserves. But never deny a people their religious holiday. Namaste

கோவிலுக்குச் சென்று வழிபடும் ஒவ்வொரு இந்துவுக்கும் ஸ்வஸ்திகா சின்னத்தின் உள்ளார்ந்த அர்த்தத்தினை அடுத்த தலைமுறையினருக்கு எடுத்துரைக்க வேண்டிய கடமை இருக்கிறது என்பதை மறக்க கூடாது. ஸ்வஸ்திகா பற்றின எதிர்மறையான பிம்பத்தை குழந்தைகளின் மனதிலிருந்து அகற்ற, பள்ளிகளில் அதன் தாத்பரியத்தை எடுத்துரைக்கும் வகையில் பாடங்களை மாற்றி அமைக்க 'அமெரிக்க இந்து அமைப்பு' முன்னெடுத்திருக்கும் திட்டங்களுக்கு இந்துக்களாகிய நாம் ஒருங்கிணைந்த ஒத்துழைப்பு தர வேண்டிய பொறுப்பில் இருக்கிறோம் என்பதனையும் உணர்வோம்.
